Echelon and Partners Showcase the Future of Energy Efficient Streetlight Solutions at LumiVille 2009
(Lyon, France - May 26, 2009) - Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) and 10 partners are showcasing LonWorks® based energy saving and control applications at the 2009 LumiVille event, May 26-28 in Lyon, France. LumiVille is the premier exhibition in Europe dedicated to external and public lighting.
Networked streetlights are a hot market segment with the addition of smart control technology because they extend the smart grid to one of the core pieces of a city's infrastructure – adding energy intelligence, better manageability, and improved safety.

At LumiVille, Echelon and its partners will focus on showing streetlights networked with Echelon's intelligent controls for smart networks, which can significantly reduce a city's energy and maintenance costs while improving light quality, decreasing light pollution, and providing increased safety.
LumiVille marks the public debut of two startup companies in the networked streetlighting market – SCS Streetlight Control Solutions and Citylone. Both companies are using Echelon's power line signaling technology and i.LON® SmartServer segment controllers to deliver IP and ISO/IEC standards-based streetlight solutions to cities.
“We believe that the market is ready for smarter streetlights that can reduce energy use and lower maintenance costs," said Bernard Delhomme, Citylone's chief executive officer. “In fact, we believe that smart streetlights are just the beginning and that cities will leverage streetlight networks for other uses to take advantage of the open infrastructure that we provide. We chose to base our new streetlight solution on Echelon's LonWorks technology because it is the best overall platform, standards-based, and it is a proven, reliable technology, with over 20 years of experience in the control industry."
“The view of the smart grid has expanded greatly since the term became popular," said Roman Francesch, general manager of SCS. “Smart streetlights are an extension of the grid – consuming huge amounts of a city's overall electricity use. SCS was founded on the belief that LonWorks-based smart streetlights will be a primary infrastructure for a city for decades to come."
