LonWorks Products

Find the Products and Systems You Need

The ISO/IEC- and ANSI-compliant LonWorks platform is comprised of the components and networking infrastructure products that enable the world's most advanced control and energy management applications. It's all based on the OSI 7-layer protocol reference model. Any microprocessor developer may purchase the specification from ISO/IEC or ANSI and implement it on the chip of their choosing royalty free.

The LonWorks platform is complete and available off-the-shelf. Advanced energy applications, smart infrastructures, and energy-awareness all begin with the LonWorks products available from Echelon and other suppliers of technology and tools for developers and integrators.

Dedicated Silicon & Embedded Components

The communications protocol is available on a number of microprocessors from a variety of suppliers, including Echelon.
Most microprocessors for LonWorks based devices are 8-bit in order to minimize costs. For higher-performance requirements, 16-, 32-, and 64-bit microprocessors, as well as FPGA and RISC processor options, are available.

The Neuron® 5000

The Neuron Chip is a performance- and cost optimized microprocessor for the LonWorks platform. This next generation LonWorks processor features nearly four times the data throughput of previous-generation chips, four 8-bit processors, more on-board memory, and faster external memory access. It includes the ISO/IEC 14908-1 communications protocol.

The Neuron 3150®/3120® Chip Family

This chip family features a performance- and cost-optimized microprocessor consisting of three 8-bit processors with equivalent performance to today’s leading 8-bit general-purpose microprocessors. It includes the ISO/IEC 14908-1 communications protocol.

Smart Transceivers

These Echelon transceivers include the Neuron core and either the ISO/IEC 14908-2 or ISO/IEC 14908-3 signaling technology in a single-chip solution.

FT 5000

This next-generation LonWorks smart transceiver integrates the Neuron 5000 core with our free-topology signaling technology. When used with the LNS® FX network operating system, the node cost to manufacturers is roughly half that of previous generations.

FT 3120/50 and PL 3120/50/70

Our previous generation FT and current generation power line (PL) smart transceivers are available with on and off board memory in a single chip solution.

Field Programmable Gate Array

The ISO/IEC 14908-1 protocol is available as an optional stack for high performance 32- and 64-bit FPGAs.

Routing, Repeating, and IP Routing

Routing and repeating products are available from multiple manufacturers. Routers ensure that control networks perform optimally. They also physically segment networks to prevent disruptions, such as a cut wire, from bringing down a network. IP routers integrate the local or wide-area IP network as a channel within a LonWorks network, extending the peer-to-peer functionality of a LonWorks network to the IP network. The network speed is limited by the speed of the IP network.

Smart Energy Management

The i.LON SmartServer, our smart energy manager, is widely used as a hardware connection to control systems for quick service restaurants, branch offices, managed street lighting systems, and commercial building demand response programs. The SmartServer also connects with virtually any legacy equipment or protocol on the market, such as Modbus or M-bus, as well as existing energy meters using a pulse counter. When used as an integral part of a LonWorks network, the SmartServer provides key system-level controls such as master scheduling, alarming, and trending. The SmartServer is powerful enough to perform these key functions while simultaneously bridging to other protocols, equipment, and the Internet.

Network Operating System

The LNS network operating system for the LonWorks platform provides a network server that enables devices in a LonWorks network to communicate with each other, and provides services that applications can use to install, monitor, and control LonWorks devices. Applications with LNS drivers can trigger actions in a LonWorks network (for example, activating a commercial building’s energy conservation mode during a demand response event). Once devices have been commissioned, programmed, and configured, they have enough intelligence to function day-to-day without any supervisory control from the operating system.

The LNS network operating system is essential in maintaining open, competitive bidding environments. End users own the operating system and database, and can buy management tools and applications that leverage the LNS server from multiple vendors. Software tools based on the LNS network operating system let system suppliers and integrators install, manage, and maintain LonWorks based systems.
